Cancer Jam 2016 Honoree: Mondo Mike

Michael “Mondo Mike” Vazquez is a husband, father, and radio professional. He and his wife, Amanda, live in North Richland Hills with their 5-year-old daughter Olivia, their dogs Pancake and Mozart, and their cats Popcorn and Cali.

Mike also considers himself to be a foodie. He loves to eat at mom and pop “greasy spoon type” restaurants, and can tell you where to find the best burgers, chicken 'n dumplings, and much more, at some of the most interesting places you've probably never eaten at.

His radio career started in Dallas in the early '90's as part of the promotions department for KVIL. While at KVIL, Mike worked with the likes of Ron Chapman and Jody Dean and was inspired to move into programming. From there, he jumped to KRLD-AM producing overnights and weekends, and then moved to mornings producing the news.

Mike's on-air debut happened at Q102/The Arrow in 1995, when he hosted overnights at the Arrow and was part of the Friday Night Wrecking Qrew on Q102 with Buddy Wiley. He then segued to Mornings with Bo & Jim. After a format flip that left Bo & Jim and Mike jobless in the late 90's, Mike eventually ended up at Total Traffic in 2001, where he worked his way to becoming Director of Operations.

In 2003, Jagger asked Mike to join him on mornings at The Edge giving sports updates, which eventually evolved into a full time co-host position with Jagger. In 2006, Jagger moved his entire show over to CBS radio's LIVE 105.3, and Mike moved with him. LIVE 105.3 flipped formats to 105.3 The Fan in 2008, and while they kept Jagger intact, Mike was replaced in 2009 with one of the other hosts from The Fan. In 2013, Mike and Jagger reunited on The Edge, where they worked together for 2 years.

Mike’s journey with cancer began in December of 2015 when he noticed a small lump underneath his left jaw. He didn’t think much of it at first, guessing that it was probably a swollen lymph node and a sign that he might have been coming down with a cold or the flu. But, he never got sick, and as time passed, the lump started to get bigger. In June of 2016, Mike went to get a physical. When he mentioned the lump, his doctor was concerned and expressed that they needed to figure out what the lump was.

After a month filled with CT scans, PET scans, oncologist visits, and paperwork, one of Mike’s friends was able to get him an appointment with an oncologist that specializes in the neck area. On July 25, 2016, doctors diagnosed Mike with Head and Neck Cancer and Oropharyngeal Cancer. He was given a treatment plan that includes removal of his left tonsil, a neck dissection, chemo, and radiation.

Mike knows that he has a battle ahead of him, but he also knows and believes that the future includes him in it. He is going to fight for his family, friends, and future.

Linda Blocker with Charles Duke: Cancer Jam 2015

Cancer Jam 2015 Raised over $35,000 for our honoree, Linda Blocker (Stage 4 Breast, Lymphatic and Bone Cancer) and due to everyone's generosity; we are happy to announce she is now able to stay in her home and continue to receive the chemotherapy treatments she needs to defeat this disease!

John Criss is the one that started it all.  He was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in 2014, and his friends and family quickly rallied around him to lift his spirits through music, and so born was Cancer Jam.

John's fight with cancer was real and it was hard, and while it was one he ultimately lost, he always did his best to keep his spirits high.  He made sure we knew how much he loved being a part of Cancer Jam, and that outpouring of support from the music community most definitely helped him keep a positive outlook.

John was larger than life and loved being surrounded by his family and friends.  Sadly John lost his two year battle with Cancer on August 29th 2016.  He's missed but most assuredly not forgotten.
